Sustainability at Suncor
Sustainable development means we are focused on managing our business for the long-term by continually improving our environmental, social and governance, or ESG, performance. A few examples of sustainable development at Suncor:

Suncor is tackling both global and regional environmental issues, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, land use, reclamation, water use and air quality.
We work with industry, governments and communities to earn and maintain the trust of residents in communities where we operate. We are progressing the way we think and act to build mutual trust and respect with Indigenous Peoples. Partnering with Indigenous businesses and communities starts with honest and respectful relationship building to understand common interests and mutual benefit. Our Journey of Reconciliation reflects a deep commitment to continue to learn through an Indigenous lens, have new conversations and be open to new perspectives.
For over 20 years, we’ve been investing in renewable energy with four operating wind power projects. Since 2006, we’ve been making a significant impact in emerging renewable liquid fuels industry with Canada’s largest ethanol plant and investments with Enerkem, LanzaTech and LanzaJet.
In 2020, almost 50 percent of our $ 535 million investment in technology development, deployment and digitalization went directly toward emissions-related technology. Since the Suncor Energy Foundation’s (SEF) inception in 1998, Suncor and SEF have contributed $ 395 million to communities worldwide. In 2020, Suncor and SEF contributed more than $ 36 million in value to 2,296 charitable and non-profit organizations across Canada and internationally. SEF is a private, charitable foundation established to receive Suncor’s contributions and support registered Canadian charitable organizations.
