Virtual Saskatchewan (freelance writer Dave Yanko)

I'm a freelance writer with a background in newspaper journalism and a good deal of experience writing about potash mining in Saskatchewan.

More AboutVirtual Saskatchewan (freelance writer Dave Yanko)

Virtual Saskatchewan is the name of my business because in 1997 I launched the multi-award winning Virtual Saskatchewan On-line Magazine, an ad-based website focusing on stories about Saskatchewan tourism. Although blogs were virtually unknown at that time -- therefore the 'on-line magazine'' metaphor -- it was really a blog about the wonders of Saskatchewan and it was one of the first such websites in Canada.

My newspaper background involved reporting and, later, being the city editor of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. In the role of city editor I determined and assigned news stories to reporters.  I believe I have a very strong 'news sense'' and that this can be very useful to companies and organizations seeking publicity.  This background and experience is further augmented by my work at two Saskatoon advertising agencies, where I wrote marketing and advertising copy as well as video and radio scripts, white papers and speeches.
